2008

FELLOWSHIP CRITERIA

FELLOWSHIP

Up to a maximum of $30,000 each is being offered. Projects may involve formal study, practical experience or research. Priority will be given to projects in Australia, the Pacific Rim, North America, the United Kingdom or Europe.


PURPOSE

The RMLA Fellowship programme aims to enable actual or potential resource management leaders and opinion influencers to:

  • Enhance their ability to bring about change and improvements in New Zealand resource management
  • Benefit from leading edge thinking, new ideas, new practices, new resources
  • Build New Zealand and global professional networks.


ELIGIBILITY

Candidates must have demonstrated high personal and intellectual qualities, and a record of achievement. They must be interested in learning from their experiences and capable of putting the information thcey gain to effective use in New Zealand. Candidates must show promise of providing leadership and helping to form opinion in their chosen fields.


FELLOWSHIP PROJECT

Fellowships are offered for study and practical experience, and may address any subject that reflects the broad objective of the RMLA:

"To promote, within New Zealand, an understanding of the role of resource management law and management processes which are legally sound, effective and efficient, and which produce high quality environmental outcomes".

The description of the project is important and candidates should give careful thought to it. Selectors will examine each proposal for:

  • The intention to combine thought, study and practical experience
  • The relevance of the project to New Zealand resource management and candidate’s potential impact on return
  • The feasibility of the proposal in the time and with the funding available


FUNDING

Grants are for up to $30,000 for travel, accommodation and course fees. Paid leave and additional support from employers is encouraged.


TENURE

Fellows must take up the fellowship within 12 months of the award.

The content and organisation of Fellows’ individual programmes will be left to them and their host institutions (with general guidance and assistance from the RMLA as required).


CONDITIONS

At the conclusion of their Fellowships, Fellows will be required to:

  • Prepare a written report to the RMLA. All reports will be made available to current and future Fellows to help inform and guide choices
  • Prepare an article of 4,000-8,000 words for publication in RM Theory & Practice published by the RMLA
  • Prepare a summary of the above article of up to 1,500 words for publication in the RM Journal published by the RMLA
  • Be available to present at the RMLA Conference and/or RMLA Roadshow


SELECTION
Selection is directed towards those individuals who have shown commitment to the RMLA goals, who have excelled in their field and who have shown potential to help others excel in that field.
Applications must be supported by 3 referees.

Application papers will be scrutinised by the RMLA National Committee which, at its discretion, will select candidates for interview. Short-listed candidates will be interviewed. The committee may decide not to appoint any candidate. Final confirmation of the awards is made by the President of the RMLA.

2006 RMLA Fellowship Winner 2006

Our successful RMLA Fellowship candidate in 2006 was Matthew Paetz of Babbage Consultants Ltd. His proposal revolved around providing town planning incentives to promote the use of renewable energy and energy efficiency in building developments. It involved travel to Japan, France and the USA to learn about best practice and its application to New Zealand. A paper based on Matthew’s research will be published in Volume 4 of Resource Management Theory & Practice, due for publication in 2007.
