EDS Conference : Green Light or Light Green? The Government’s environmental reforms
The new Labour-led Government has come to power with an ambitious environmental reform agenda. Significant changes are proposed for the Resource Management Act, urban development, freshwater management and climate change. Conservation funding is to be increased and a billion trees planted. The Kermadec Ocean Sanctuary is to be resolved and a blue whale sanctuary created off Taranaki. And Labour has promised an independent review of the Quota Management System.
But are the policies up to scratch and will they deliver what is needed for an environment under pressure? Many lack detail and require further work. EDS’s 2018 conference will put these policies under a focused spotlight. We will hear from international experts, Ministers, Māori, local councils, industry, scientists, lawyers and conservationists. We will give the policy commitments a rigorous vetting and help achieve quality outcomes for our environment.
