Making Your Case Count: Insights from Experienced Commissioners

  • Russell McVeagh, 48 Shortland Street Auckland, 1010 New Zealand (map)

Registrations are open now!

Join us for an engaging and interactive Q&A session with three highly experienced Independent Hearing Commissioners, Greg Hill (Resource Management Consultant), Ken Gimblett (Senior Environmental Planner), and Sarah Shaw (Barrister).

This session will provide candid insights into what really matters in hearings from the commissioners’ perspective, and what their role actually entails in practice.  The session is purposefully set in a "conversational style" to enable the Commissioners to openly discuss key issues, good (and bad) practice, how to communicate effectively and make your submission truly count, emerging trends, and importantly, answer questions from the floor.

Whether you are an expert witness, planner, lawyer, council officer, or fellow commissioner, this event offers an opportunity to up-skill and hear directly from some of the best decision-makers.

To encourage open and frank discussion, Chatham House Rules will apply. In addition to questions from the floor, attendees are encouraged to submit questions in advance for the panel’s consideration by emailing info@rmla.org.nz by Tuesday 29 October 2025. Every effort will be made to ensure your questions are put to the panel, time permitting.

This event also marks the first in an exciting RMLA professional development series running into the following year, exploring different aspects of hearing practice, decision-making, and professional collaboration.

Spaces are limited — register now to secure your place: $35 RMLA Members | $55 Non-members
