Mō te Tūranga | About the Role

We have a secondment/fixed term opportunity for a Crown Counsel in the Crown Legal Risk Group starting from around July 2025, through to July 2026, to cover a period of parental leave.

The role is in a team that focuses on natural resources issues, including climate change, resource management, conservation, transport and land law. This is a time of significant reform in resource management law and the role provides a great opportunity for cutting-edge advice work and insight into the workings of central government.

The Crown Counsel role offers opportunities for both litigation and advice work, including contact with Ministers and senior government officials. The role provides development opportunities for anyone who wants to pursue a career in public law. Additionally, you will have the opportunity to take on a leadership role in mentoring junior staff and building relationships with our departmental clients.

We would like to hear from lawyers with at least 8 years PQE who are interested in:

  • advice work and litigation for the Crown;

  • contributing to robust government decision-making; and

  • working on legally challenging issues.

We would like to talk to people with a range of skillsets, with public or private sector experience. Litigation experience is preferred.

Location: Te Whanganui-a-Tara | Wellington

Remuneration

The appointing salary range for the Crown Counsel role is $114,585-$187,839 based on skills and experience
