Fisheries Bill delay a chance to reset fisheries reform

The Environmental Defence Society says the decision to delay the Fisheries Amendment Bill until after the general election should mark the end for legislation that would weaken environmental protections and public accountability.

EDS Policy Director Raewyn Peart said the Fisheries Amendment Bill attracted widespread opposition because it headed in precisely the wrong direction. It weakens environmental safeguards, restricts public oversight, and makes it harder to hold fisheries decision-makers to account.
