Opportunity to participate in Standards New Zealand committee: road-traffic noise management
Standards New Zealand is commencing a revision of NZS 6806:2010 Acoustics – Road-traffic noise – New and altered roads and is seeking nominations for the relevant Standards Development Committee.
RMLA has been invited to nominate a representative because the revision may be relevant to members whose work intersects with road-traffic noise, consenting, infrastructure, development, effects assessment, mitigation, regulatory processes, or related expert evidence.
The revision is intended to modernise NZS 6806 and provide more consistent methods across the project lifecycle, including:
optioneering and preliminary risk assessment;
assessment of noise effects, including health impacts;
mitigation identification and evaluation;
construction design and verification;
standard mitigation measures and reporting requirements; and
improved consistency in describing noise effects and incorporating health-based analysis.
Standards New Zealand has also advised that some matters are out of scope, including noise limits, measurement and modelling methods, land use planning, and legal / policy matters.
RMLA is sharing this opportunity for member awareness. At this stage, RMLA is not proposing to nominate a formal organisational representative. However, members with relevant expertise or professional interest may wish to consider whether they are suited to participate in their individual capacity.
The committee is expected to run for approximately 12 months, with Standards New Zealand indicating an estimated total time commitment of approximately 25–30 hours, including online committee meetings, review of draft material, possible sub-working group input, public consultation feedback review, and final ballot review.
Members considering nomination should note that the nomination material asks for details of relevant subject-matter knowledge, use of standards, professional experience, committee / regulatory experience, and governance experience where applicable. Nominees are also required to complete a conflict of interest disclosure form.
Deadline: Standards New Zealand has requested nomination and conflict of interest forms by Wednesday 15 July 2026 although late nominations will be considered.
Interested members should review the material from Standards New Zealand below and respond directly in accordance with the nomination process.
