Strong renewable generation reduces reliance on coal and gas

The latest Energy Quarterly data release from the Ministry of Business, Innovation and Employment (MBIE) shows renewable sources generated 92% of New Zealand's electricity in the June 2026 quarter.

For the third quarter in a row, renewable sources generated over 90% of electricity generation, with this quarter also seeing the highest share of renewables in a June quarter on record

Strong renewable generation helped meet increasing electricity demand while significantly reducing the need for coal and gas generation.
